10 Things to Do in Palm Springs Area This Weekend

What's on your agenda? Here's our suggestions for July 17-20

LIVE MUSIC

Ace Hotel & Swim Club's "Summer School"
School is not out for summer. Sorry Alice. The Ace Hotel & Swim Club hosts a weekend of music and art featuring De Lux, Wunder Wunder (pictured at right), and All the Colours. KCRW's Chris Douridas will be one of the poolside Deejays.

Amy & Freddy
They seem like an unlikely duo, but Amy Armstrong and Freddy Allen click on stage, and have been for 18 years. They mix in comedy as well July 18-19 at Copa Palm Springs. Find out what life-changing roles they will tackle after their Palm Springs gig at Copa.

Palm Springs Retro
Songs from the stars who used to call Palm Springs home, like Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Sonny Bono and more in this new musical revue, "Palm Springs JUMP!" at the Purple Room Restaurant and Stage in Palm Springs. Dining starts at 5:30 and the show at 7 p.m. July 19.

TAKE A HIKE

Friends of the Desert Mountains Take You Where its Cool
This hike-happy group begins a series of treks beginning with Night Adventures in the Monument. Participants meet at sunset off highway 74 at the Art Smith parking lot. You'll be checking out bats and other nighttime creatures.

HIT THE LINKS

Indio Municipal Golf Course Lights up the Valley Sky
Triple digits are probably here to stay, and golf seems like the last activity you would want to do until you learn about the lighted course in Indio. It's one of the most challenging par-3 course you'll ever play, and writer Judd Spicer gives you pointers on how to navigate the course.

WE ALL SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM

Living Desert marks National Ice Cream Day
Zoo guests can buy one ice cream at the Grill & Café and receive another for free July 20. Zoo animals will also receive ice treats. Could any other month but July be National Ice Cream Month?

ROAD TRIP

Big Bear's 12th Annual Xeriscape Garden Tour
About 90 minutes away, and cooler, is Big Bear Lake, where they host a tour of several homes. See if you can tell which lawns are real or artificial. Pick up a tour booklet at Emingers Mountain Nursery, 9 a.m. to noon.

SHOP 'TIL YOU DROP

Thursday VillageFest
Walk the main drag in downtown Palm Springs. Summer is a tad slower, so you may see more foodie vendors than those selling wares, but it's stil a definitelslice of Palm Springs. Stop and visit with the Rabbi and ask a question.

Saturday-Sunday at College of the Desert
You may see more vendors here. The whole fair is protected under a screened roof above the college's parking lot, so that helps with the heat.

Indio Open Air Market
Opens at 4 p.m. and runs until 10 p.m., so you can turn it into a full evening with dinner and shopping at the Riverside County Fairgrounds.
