Whatchawannadothisweekend? (31Aug06)

Aug 31, 2006 - 10:17 AM
3-DAY WEEKEND!Tonight: At 7:30pm, catch the Redlands Symphony (plus a fireworks show) in the season finale of Palm Desert's Summer of Fun Concert/Movie Series at the Civic Center Park Amphitheater, 73510 Fred Waring. When conductor Co Nguyen wields his baton, even the rowdy horn section listens up.

Friday: Legendary singing cowboy Roy Rogers broke ground for the first two buildings in Pioneertown on September 1, 1946, so the town is commemorating its 60th anniversary, tonight through Sunday. As part of the celebration, a film festival of Cisco Kid TV episodes will be featured at the Red Dog Saloon all evening. Sit. Stay. Good pooch.

Saturday morning: From 10am to 4pm, it's Wild Bill Holcomb's Mounted Shooting Showdown at Bear Valley Heritage Days. Cowboys, riding around on horses, blazing away at stuff? I'm there.

Saturday evening: Blue Collar comedian Ron "Tater Salad" White tells blue-tinged jokes at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, 8pm. As Ron is fond of saying: "You Can't Fix Stupid."

Alternative activity for Saturday evening @ 8pm: Country music superstar Sara Evans performs at the Spotlight 29 Casino. Sara's also hosting an Eating Disorders Fashion Show in a few weeks...

Sunday: Doors open at 6pm for the James Brown concert at Key Club Morongo. "Soul Brother Number One," "Mr. Dynamite," "The Godfather of Soul," "The Hardest-Working Man in Show Business." And yes, his eyebrows are tattoos.

On a 3-day weekend like this, we usually include a Monday listing. But we can't find any cool Monday events. If you're aware of one, please let us know!

To make up for the shortfall, here's another Sunday activity: At 8pm, Rodney Crowell appears in concert at Bear Valley Heritage Days. The Obscenity Prayer, from his latest CD, is a manic masterpiece.
