P E R S P E C T I V E S Photo Open Featuring: STEVEN ARNOLD & SUNNY McNAIR, JANUARY 12TH - FEBRUARY 9TH 2008, JANSSENARTSPACE

In conjunction with the Palm Springs Film Festival Janssenartspace is proud to present the photographic work of Steven Arnold and Sunny McNair in PERSPECTIVES, an exhibit where two levels of existences, meet at a common plane. Opening Reception will be held on January 12th 2008 6-9pm.

Regrettably, Steven Arnold passed away in 1994. His photographs can be seen in several museums worldwide, including Museum of Modern Art in New York. Private collections include Salvador Dali, Cher, Goldie Hawn, Lauren Hutton, Yves. St. Laurent and many others. Born in Berkeley, California, Steven's black and white photographs are staged eroticism. He uses dramatic lighting, much like we see in old film noir movies. Arnold uses a mixture of "pleasure-dome, prop-house wonderland." Inspired by friend Salvador Dali, the staged photograph was a perfect opportunity for Steven Arnold to avoid the compromises one was forced to make in commercial filmmaking. One of Steven's models and friend, Brett Kester, has accumulated several original, signed photographs of the artist known as Steven Arnold, which will be exhibited at Janssenartspace through February 9th.

On the other side of the spiritual universe we have Sunny McNair in her first gallery exhibit. At a young age, she began with sketching, painting and now photography. The technique behind her "morphography" was discovered by accident, but she has since made some very purposeful contributions to the world of monochromatic photography. The misshapen faces reflect her eccentric upbringing, in all its many facets. In her work, she attempts to capture those fleeting moments where a plane of existence is out of whack, where we cannot decide between one or the other, where we love and hate at the same time, and where our greatest discoveries are made. Gathering inspiration from the wonderful randomness of it all, she takes picture after picture, looking for the next rhapsody of expression.
