Independence Day! Fourth of July! Fireworks! Parades! Music! Barbecues!

Even as a kid, I loved the Independence Day celebrations and my enthusiasm hasn’t waned in the least through the decades. So, I’m going to have a lot of fun this weekend

Starting Friday in Palm Springs, the holiday kicks off with America’s favorite pastime — baseball — as the Power baseball club takes on the Air Force at Palm Springs Stadium, 1901 E. Baristo Rd., at 6:05 p.m. After the game, there will be fireworks.

For East Valley Boomers, Indio is planning an old-fashion patriotic celebration at the Riverside County Fairgrounds, 83503 Hwy. 111, with food, music, and of course, fireworks!

Palm Desert and Rancho Mirage jointly celebrate with a 7:15 p.m. music concert followed by a 9 p.m. fireworks display at Civic Park, 73510 Fred Waring Dr.

Desert Hot Springs’ Fourth of July event takes place at 66750 Park Ln. Lots of family fun to be had there.

As Americans, we are truly blessed. We have a lot to celebrate, so come on out!

There’s even more happening this weekend that’s not directly related to the Independence Day celebrations.

Palm Canyon Theatre, 538 N. Palm Canyon Dr., presents a musical version of Reefer Madness with 8 p.m. showings both Sat. and Sun. Remember Reefer Madness? It came out as an educational film in 1934 warning of the dangers of the “Devil Weed” — marijuana. I remember seeing the film in college at a film festival. The air was hazy with the moviegoers’ smoke. I still remember one young male character in the movie, hopelessly addicted, yelling “Somebody give me a reefer!” The entire theater shouted the words in unison. Reefer Madness is fun, entertaining, and, well, what we used to call a “goof” back in the ’60s.

As we age, our tastes (supposedly) mature as well. If Reefer Madness is not sophisticated enough, there are some wonderful opportunities Sunday at the Palm Springs Art Museum, 101 Museum Dr. The entire community is invited to the 101st birthday of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. This event kicks off the museum’s summer exhibition of the woman painter. It consists of about 50 photographs of Kahlo taken by celebrity photographer Nickolas Muray. Enjoy the art, listen to music, and even eat some birthday cake!

All in all, this Fourth of July weekend promises to be a great time for Baby Boomers.
