Human signposts: Emmanuel
By admin

If you take a weekend drive on surface streets in certain areas of the Coachella Valley, it's very likely you'll see several people holding painted arrow boards. Most motorists cruise right past these bearers of commercial tidings... but I decided to stop.
Name: Emmanuel. Just Emmanuel.
Location: NE corner of Washington and 41st, Bermuda Dunes.
Advertising: Royal Palms Condos.
Time: Weekends, 10am-4pm.
How long have you been doing this? For like... a month? Month and a half?
Do you plan to be doing it much longer?Probably for like... a couple more months?
Do you have another job?Um... busboy?
What's been the strangest reaction from a passing motorist?Like... honking? And some people flip me off?
Really? That seems kind of unnecessary. Were you doing anything to provoke it?Nope. Just like... moving my sign?
Yikes. That's a pretty aggressive reaction. I had no idea. Do you have any special moves?Usually, I rotate the sign - but all I can do today is a short, quick jerk, like... back and forth? [Emmanuel reveals an injury on one hand.]
Omigosh. I hope that heals soon. Okay, one final question: if you could tell the people in these cars something about yourself, what would it be?That I'm a hard worker? [
