What's your name?

Okay, my name is Michael, my last name's Barr. I go by "Orion Starseed." That is basically my heritage.

When did you have your first encounter?

In 1978, at the Ontario Airport, of all places, in the middle of the day.

In the middle of the day?

Yes! We had come up for my grandfather's funeral in Redlands, and we had taken my sister to the airport to fly back to Las Vegas. We were standing outside, waiting for her plane to taxi and take off. Out of nowhere, this huge silver disk, about a hundred feet in diameter, just kind of floated down over the runway. For about fifteen seconds, it bobbed up and down, without making a sound. And then, in half a second, it was just... gone.

Did a lot of other people see this?

It was myself, my dad, and another elderly couple who were standing together. Now whether anybody else in the airport saw this, I don't know. At that point, an event like this was totally outside my reality. I was a young person, I didn't know anything. So when I got back to Las Vegas, I went to the library to see if there were any books on this. I was shocked to find out how much information there really was. So that started my journey into investigating what was going on here.

What happened after that?

Since then, they've come back to visit me from time to time. Sometimes it's in the dream state, and sometimes... well, this is the major event that took me out of my old life and put me into the life I'm in today: I had a heart attack, a major one, in 1997. And when they got me into the emergency room, they had to do angioplasty right away. So while they were prepping for surgery, the room started to get extremely bright. It seemed to me that the doctors weren't noticing how bright the room was getting, and that was odd. Then, two forms started to take shape out of this light: heads, shoulders, bodies. I started to get this euphoric feeling that began at my feet, and rolled up through my body. When it reached my head, I was gone. My next conscious memory was in the recovery room.

Do you think this was an effect of the anesthetic?

Well, I asked the nurse, and she said that I had been awake and talking. When you get angioplasty, you're wide awake. So for three hours, I was here, but not here. There was this information in my head, scientific information, and I didn't know where it came from. I mean, I barely got out of high school. For the next month, while recovering at home, I sat around and asked myself, "Why did something like this happen to me?"

Have you experienced any other things like this?

Periodically, from that point on, they have come to me with suggestions, that I go here, or do this. I had a decent job in Las Vegas at the time, but they came to me and said, "You have to go to California." And I struggled with that, for a year. I said to myself, "This is absolutely ludicrous, you're a sane person, why would you do this?" But it was a gut feeling: that if I didn't do it, I just couldn't live. This went on for a year, and finally, I called my friend, my boss, and he said, "You're nuts." But when I got to California, things just started… [snaps his fingers several times] I started to meet people, I started to get into the scientific aspect of all of this, and it's just been a continuous journey since then.

Have you been able to support yourself since then – did your income stop?

This is one of the interesting facets. When I left that job, finding another job was not easy. Especially finding one that would pay me what that one was paying. But I got by for awhile, and then I had another heart attack. I've had four.

Omigosh.

And after this last one, all of a sudden I'm bringing home twenty-five hundred dollars of disability money per month.

Wow.

It all just snowballed. But the prerequisite was, in this last little dream that I had, was now that I've got the money and I'm retired, I have to go and talk. I have to put myself out there and take some of the mysticism out of this stuff. I have to give it a more current, scientific viewpoint.

Are you scheduled to give one of the lectures today?

No.

Okay, you saw this saucer, and you've been contacted in dream states...

Mostly in dream states, except for that hospital visit.

Was there anything more dramatic? Some people say they've been abducted, taken aboard spaceships, etc.

No. Since then, I've started to have memories... to me, the only way I can explain it is like being in a coma, or having amnesia, and coming out of it, and all of a sudden starting to remember things. I don't know where these memories are coming from.

So it's like "lost time"?

It's like... I remember being on other worlds and in other realities. I don't know where, I don't know when. But I'll be sitting alone, and a memory will come from the back of my mind to the front, and I'll see an event or a person. These memories don't last very long, but they are happening more and more often.

You recognize these events or people?

Yes. They seem very, very familiar.

You said that you struggled with this stuff for awhile. Did you just decide to go with it, to let it wash over you?

For me, it was struggling with the embarrassment. I didn't want to be seen as somebody who was nuts. You know, I'd heard all the stories. But I'd had the encounter – that thing that happened in the hospital, I knew that had happened. But you just keep that to yourself, and hope that nobody finds out about it. Since then, I've met a lot of people, very credible people, people at the top of their fields, who've had the same type of experiences, and they're putting themselves out there. I said, "Well, if they can do it, why can't I?"

One last question: if you don't want to be seen as nuts, do you feel you're serving that cause by wearing this costume?

Well, the people that are putting on this event... we've been involved in the UFO community for awhile. And most of the community takes this stuff way too seriously.

So this is your attempt to lighten things up?

Exactly. Y'know, I don't mind looking like an idiot. [We both laugh - click link for sound recording.]
