In 1999, she was awarded The National Medal of Arts by President Clinton.

In 2005, she received The Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Bush.

She has won 18 Grammy Awards, and currently holds the record--11--for the most Best Female R&B Vocal Performance wins (including 8 consecutive awards from 1968-1975... the first eight ever awarded in that category).
