Living Desert's 'Howl-O-Ween' Dresses up in Western Wear

Trick or Treaters tour town for sweet loot

Michelle Roe Arts & Entertainment

Surrounded by blue skies, mountains, and a dusty desert floor, the spirit of the Wild West lives at the Living Desert’s “Howl-O-Ween” event.

The new theme, open to kids of all ages from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 25-27, allows exploration of an old-fashioned western town hauntingly decorated with cobwebs and spiders in addition to the many animal exhibits, aviaries, and gardens that park guests are accustomed to seeing.

Trick or Treaters can visit the likes of a General Store, bank, saloon, and livery stable to get their fill of sweet loot.

Round up your ghouls and goblins for:

• Pumpkin Bowling

• Face painting

• Pumpkin decorating

• Costume prize contests

• And the all new, “Batty Bingo”, a benefit for the animal adoption program.

Fear Factor

Before you can wander through Eagle Canyon to get creeped out by the proximity of the frogs and the Mountain Lion, you’ll have to pass the reptiles and invertebrates exhibit at the entrance.

Even the bravest adventurer may be frightened by the collection of sidewinders, lizards, tarantulas, and scorpions.

More handy suggestions:

• Parched and hungry? Grab some grub at the Chuckwagon.

• Too much sugar? Burn it off in the Gecko Gulch play area.

• Need a break? Take a ride on the Endangered Species Carousel

• Still not tired? Head to the Petting Kraal to mingle with sheep, goats, and a donkey.

Leopards, Jaguars and Bats…Oh My!

Bring your own wolf pack for a zoo “members only” free Howl-O-Ween experience Oct. 31. Howl at the moon and scream with your possy and you just might catch a glimpse of some of The Living Desert’s best nocturnal predators.

And isn’t everything more exhilarating under the blanket of the desert night sky?
