At Salton Sea, North Shore Yacht Club is Alive!

Dear Editor:

Thank you for telling your readers about the North Shore Yacht Club, a beautiful Riverside County building that sits next to the Salton Sea. Unfortunately, the article stated that “the building … is sometimes used as a community center but otherwise closed to the public.” I need to correct this error. The building is, in fact, an active part of the community and is open to the public.

The 53-year-old North Shore Yacht Club is a midcentury modern treasure and a community treasure. The building, recently redeveloped by the County of Riverside, has become a thriving community center serving the residents of the North Shore community.

Myriad activities offered there include after-school programs, food distribution to the needy, fitness and exercise programs, Desert Recreation District camps, and English as a Second Language classes.

It is rented out for private events, weddings, baby showers, and bridal showers. It has hosted many well-received community events, such as community resources fairs, fire education events, Thanksgiving community dinners, breakfasts with Santa, Halloween candy carnivals, movies in the park, and springtime fun events.

The center is home to the North Shore Women’s Club, which meets every Wednesday morning, and has hosted meetings of the Salton Sea Authority and legislative oversight hearings on the Salton Sea.

The county continues to facilitate tours and photo shoots in and around the community center.

I’m very pleased to say that this true community center is continuing to get more use by more people than ever.
