Our Top Dentists

Do you smile when you think about your dentist?

If so, you may find his or her name on our second annual list of the top dentists in the Coachella Valley.

Georgia-based topDentists™ has provided the following list excerpted from its 2009 national list that includes more than 50 dentists and specialists in the Palm Springs area. The results are based on thousands of detailed evaluations of dental professionals by their peers. The complete database is available at www.usatopdentists.com. For more information, call 1-760-364-0853; write to P.O. Box 970, Augusta, GA 30903; e-mail info@usatopdentists.com; or visit www.usatopdentists.com.

The Selection Process

“If you had a patient in need of a dentist, which dentist would you refer them to?”

Thousands of dentists were asked this question to help determine who the top dentists should be. Dentists and specialists were asked to take into consideration years of experience, continuing education, manner with patients, use of new techniques and technologies, and, of course, physical results.

The nomination pool consisted of all dentists listed online with the American Dental Association (www.ada.org), as well as all dentists listed online with their local dental societies, thus allowing virtually every dentist the opportunity to participate. Dentists also were given the opportunity to nominate other dentists that they felt should be included in the list. Respondents were asked to use only their knowledge of their peers’ work when evaluating nominees.

Voters were asked to evaluate the practitioners with whose work they were familiar. Once the balloting was completed, the scores were compiled and then averaged. The numerical average required for inclusion varied, depending on the average for all the nominees within the specialty and the geographic area. Borderline cases were given careful consideration by the editors. Voting characteristics and comments were taken into consideration while making decisions. Past awards a dentist has received, status in various dental academies (Academy of General Dentistry, American Academy of Periodontology, etc.) could have played a factor.

Once the decisions were finalized, state dental boards for disciplinary actions were checked to make sure the practitioners had an active license and were in good standing with the board. Then letters of congratulations were sent to all the listed dentists.

Of course there are many fine dentists who are not included in this representative list. It is intended as a sampling of the great body of talent in the field of dentistry in the United States. A dentist’s inclusion on the list is based on the subjective judgments of his or her fellow dentists. While it is true that the lists may at times disproportionately reward visibility or popularity, the polling methodology largely corrects for any biases, and the lists continue to represent the most reliable, accurate, and useful database of dentists available anywhere.
