Senior Living

A Guide to Accommodations and Services

ISTOCKPHOTO.COM

Whether you’re evaluating options for yourself or a loved one, this senior living special section will help you differentiate between types of accommodations and services available. You can choose from a variety of housing and care options, including independent living, assisted living, home care, and skilled nursing care (for acute healthcare needs). We hope this section steers you to the most appropriate environment based on your particular needs.

1 ASSISTED LIVING

This option combines housing, support services, and healthcare. Assisted living is designed for individuals who require assistance with meals, medication management or assistance, bathing, dressing, and transportation. Some residents may have memory disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, or they may need help with mobility, incontinence, or other conditions. Residents are assessed upon move in or any time there is a change in condition to develop an individualized service plan. Supportive services are provided in a way to maximize residents’ dignity, autonomy, privacy, independence, and safety.

2 SKILLED NURSING

Highly skilled, licensed, and specially trained professionals serve the needs of individuals requiring long-term nursing care or short-term rehabilitation services. These environments typically offer rehabilitation services (physical, occupational, and speech), three meals and snacks daily with selections from a menu approved by a registered dietitian, semiprivate and private rooms, medical services (pharmacy, dentistry, optometry, podiatry, laboratory, and X-ray), a 24-hour emergency call system, technology and programming to promote healing and wellness, on-site activity and therapy areas, daily oversight by a registered nurse and on-call medical director, and specialized activities to meet individual needs.

3 NURSING HOMES

Nursing homes offer round-the-clock care if someone is too sick to live on their own or if they need to recover after having an illness or operation. Nursing homes are licensed by the state to provide nursing care, personal care, and medical services. They provide different kinds of therapies, meals, and laundry and housekeeping service. They also offer activities like art classes to help residents socialize and make it a place to call home.

4 INDEPENDENT LIVING/ RETIREMENT COMMUNITIES

Designed for seniors who require little or no assistance with the activities of daily living, independent living units provide services for residents such as housekeeping, laundry, and meals. Residents of independent units may have some home healthcare services provided by in-house staff or an outside agency. Residents pay a rental rate or monthly fee. Communities offer several services in one location, which gives a person the chance to stay in one place even if his or her needs change. These communities also offer social activities and educational opportunities. Some communities for senior adults do not provide hospitality or supportive services.

5 ADULT DAY SERVICES

Because so many people prefer to stay in their own homes as they age, home and community-based services provide help and support — everything from chores to healthcare services or even just someone to call and check in. These services often offer caregivers help, support, and a much-deserved break from their duties. Some of these services include:

• Care Managers
Care managers help people figure out what services they need and how to pay for them.

• Congregate Meal Programs
These programs, often sponsored by senior centers or housing communities, offer free or low-cost meals to seniors in group settings.

• Financial Counseling
Participants receive help balancing a checkbook and filing taxes and Medicare/ Medicaid forms.

• Friendly Visiting
Volunteers visit and check in with a person at his or her home.

• Home Healthcare
These services include part-time nursing services, personal care, help with chores, medical supplies or equipment, and different kinds of therapies (physical, occupational, and speech) to help a person recover from an illness or surgery.

• Housekeeping and Chore Services
These include assistance with common household chores, as well as harder tasks like washing windows.

• Hospice Care
Hospice programs are well known for the care and services they offer people who are dying and their families. Hospice care is provided in the client’s home, a nursing home, or a freestanding facility.

• Home-Delivered Meals
Participants receive meals if they cannot cook on their own.

• Personal Care Services
Attendants provide help with things like bathing and dressing.

• Senior Centers
These provide a place where older people can come together for social and recreational activities.

• Transportation Services
Services are available to help people get to and from shopping centers, medical appointments, senior centers, and other places.

6 ALZHEIMER’S CARE

Because caring for a person with memory loss and cognitive dysfunction is difficult, this living arrangement provides warmth, support, and a high level of care performed by nurturing caregivers specially trained in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Look for private accommodations, pleasurable dining rooms, specialized daily activities, personalized care plans by a registered nurse, medication management, a personalized nutrition plan supervised by a registered dietitian, a holistic wellness program (physical, psychological, social, and spiritual), support group activities, assistance with activities of daily living, 24-hour care, housekeeping, and scheduled transportation.
