Colin Fisher Studios creates a warm and inviting space in which to showcase its handselected inventory.
Huge canvases from painters that are so well-known we won’t mention their names, to self-taught ones; sculpture made of alabaster, marble, wood and bronze; and incredible antiques in perfectly styled settings.
This one-of-a-kind destination meticulously designs each room into a vignette with fine art, furniture, and curated objects. If this doesn’t sound like your typical art gallery or antique shop, well, this establishment concedes without hesitation. They blend the items you expect with many you’d never imagine.
In one room, a large abstract canvas hangs above an overstuffed sofa in oatmeal tweed. Next to a late 18th century inlay wood arm chair, a pair of life-sized sheep stand guard over a setting that deserves to be kept forever but will transform in the coming days. The studio goes through metaphoric change at a swift pace. If you don’t see what you are looking for, it likely happens to be in one of half a dozen nearby warehouses. Just ask.
As proprietor, Colin Fisher has spent a lifetime collecting. He has earned recognition not only for his eclectic style but also because you won’t find the items he carries anywhere else in the desert. His business has grown consistently year after year based on reputation and an excited word of mouth.
Unlike most fine art galleries, or shops with terrific antiques and huge canvases by great artists, consignment is a rarity at Colin Fisher Studios, where most everything is owned outright. “I only buy pieces that I would have in my own home,” Fisher says. “If down the road no one else likes it, then I end up having it for the rest of my life. So I'd better love it first.” Fortunately customers, collectors, and admirers — both here in the valley and worldwide (as the store can be shopped online at 1stdibs.com) — appreciate and seek out Fisher’s impeccable taste.
What’s the catch? That’s just it. Colin Fisher Studios provides honorable service and high-quality items in a beautiful, home-like space. “We aren’t interested in a quick sale,” Fisher says. “Whether the same person comes back year after year and doesn’t ever buy a thing to those who have purchased so many things you wonder where they are putting it, we love them all for the duration. Our bond isn’t built on how much you spend, but rather out of respect and kindness. The rest will just happen. Our relationships are more meaningful than a chair or pillow.”
Noteworthy of any publication might very well be the extraordinary setting in which its large collection of art, sculpture, and other items is displayed. However, there is a human side to the gallery that can’t be overlooked. Gilligan (the gallery cat), Molly (the gallery dog), and, on occasion, Baby Girl (Colin’s house cat), are the real proprietors of Colin Fisher Studios. They are the true treasurers amongst treasurers, and visitors to the gallery never fail to acknowledge their presence.
Add Colin Fisher Studios to your short list for sure — and quickly before you miss an ever-changing thing.
