A Popular Downtown Palm Spring Hotel
Palm Springs Hyatt Regency Resort
The City’s innovative Hotel Incentive Program is paving the way for a $15 million luxury renovation of the popular Hyatt Regency in Downtown Palm Springs which is expected to be complete in mid-October – just in time for the Coachella Valley tourism season!
“We’re very excited about this renovation,” said General Manager David Hill. “When it’s complete, Downtown Palm Springs will have a spectacularly upgraded destination hotel with a reconfigured lobby, pool area with luxury cabanas, additional meeting space, and newly renovated suites.”
The renovation of the194-room hotel along Palm Canyon Drive, which was constructed in 1986, will qualify the Hyatt to take part in the City’s Hotel Incentive Program, which allows hotels to receive a rebate of up to 50 percent of any new transient occupancy tax, (TOT,) that may be generated following a renovation.
“It’s a great incentive for hotels to renovate,” said Mary Jo Ginther, Director of the Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism. “These upgraded properties will allow us to bring the next generation of guests to Palm Springs.”
Besides newly redecorated luxury suites, the Hyatt renovation will include 3,500 square feet of additional meeting space as well as three new suites and a redesigned lobby, restaurant, and pool area.
According to Hill, the additional meeting space, which will be converted from storefronts along Palm Canyon Drive, is expected to significantly increase the Hyatt’s revenue.
“We have always been a market leader in this destination because we have the best location and views in the City,” Hill said. “Most people who visit Palm Springs want to be in Downtown and now that the Hyatt will have a completely new fresh look, we expect to have huge interest in our property.”
Renovation of the pool area at the Hyatt Regency Suites underway
Palm Springs is in a unique tourism position because many of the City’s major hotels properties have recently undergone multi-million dollar renovations with the intent to take part in the Hotel Incentive Program.
Some of the renovated properties include the $70 million renovation of the Riviera Resort & Spa and a $40 million renovation of the former Howard Johnson Inn – to the trendy Ace Hotel & Swim Club.
Additionally, a $20 million renovation of the Wyndham Palm Springs into a luxury Renaissance resort is currently underway and expected to be complete in early 2010.
“The fact that so many major hoteliers are renovating their properties and investing in Palm Springs -- proves that our City continues to be a major worldwide vacation destination,” said Mayor Steve Pougnet. “No other city in the Coachella Valley can boast the same kind of tourism investment.”
