For 25 years, music lovers at Vicky’s of Santa Fe and around the world have agreed with the Chicago Sun Times, “There is only one Doug Montgomery.” His unforgettable live performances and his numerous versatile recordings reveal the vast talent of this world-class musician and his repeat engagements at some of the country’s premier private and corporate events proves the appeal is surely the music but also the man himself.
Doug Montgomery is a most sought after pianist, singer and performer. As a 1976 graduate of Northwestern University with a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in 1978 at the Juilliard School of Music, he got his start at the age of 10 in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois. While a senior student (1976) at Northwestern University, he won the Musical Arts Competition in Chicago, Illinois. He also won top prize in 1977 at the Robert Casadesus Piano Competition in Cleveland, Ohio, while a student at Juilliard. Upon receiving his Master’s in 1978, he was awarded the prestigious Joseph Lhevinne Scholarship in piano and returned to teach at Juilliard for a year. Perhaps the reason for this popularity is his ability to present classical, standard and pop music with equal skill and finesse.
The talented Michael Feinstein has said about Montgomery, “He is a gifted musician who is equally at home performing Chopin or singing show tunes. The wondrous part is that he does both with great style, verve and talent.” In fact the two men have been compared to one another on more than one occasion, Montgomery being referred to as the “Michael Feinstein of the Southwest”. He’s extremely popular and has appeared as a solo artist throughout the United States and Europe and has appeared regularly at Vicky’s of Santa Fe in Indian Wells for 25 consecutive seasons. Doug will appear at Vicky’s of Santa Fe February 26 thru May 3, 2014, Every Wednesday thru Saturday 7-11pm.
In addition to pleasing his loyal local audiences, Montgomery maintains a very busy schedule traveling the country appearing at public and private events where he can count such celebrities as The Ford Family, Henry Kissinger, Princess Margaret, Arnold Palmer, Diane Sawyer and Oscar De La Renta among his fans.
Most recently, world-renowned pianist, composer and conductor of the Santa Fe Opera, Frederic Chaslin, said of Montgomery,” He is the kind of artist that I admire the most. He is not only an accomplished pianist with a brilliant technique, he creates every evening with a new world of music, combining a talent of improviser, arranger in the best tradition of the 19th century pianists like Franz Liszt, applying those skills to the largest repertoire you can imagine, from Bach to the newest pop songs. He is a real genius whom I learn from every time I hear him perform.” An accomplished and versatile recording artist, his numerous recordings display his formidable technical prowess combined with consummate sensitivity and musicality. Doug’s most recent efforts include a recording of 14 original compositions called “The Pianist Dreams” and a collection of Spanish and Italian favorites called “Mediterranean Nights.”
