Pedal Around the Desert

Tom Brewster

Bicycle enthusiasts gravitate toward the Coachella Valley for myriad reasons: ideal weather, easy terrain, great sightseeing, a green attitude, great exercise, a growing network of bike paths, and cycle-centric events such as Tour de Palm Springs in February.

Relatively flat landscape makes riding in the desert an easy pleasure. Bike paths snake around the city and beyond, taking you through star-studded neighborhoods or along golf courses and bucolic washes.

The city of Palm Springs provides a map of bike paths throughout the area that features six self-guided city tours. Explore the city’s residential areas and meander among midcentury architecture. If you’re feeling a little more ambitious, you can pedal your way along well-marked paths through Mesquite Golf and Country Club and Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort. Maps are available on the city website at www.palmsprings.com. Bike Palm Springs (www.bikepsrentals.com) offers a fun map of the stars’ homes. Websites such as www.bikely.com and www.mapmyride.com often feature paths developed by other cyclists.
