Explore Palm Springs: Snow? In Palm Springs? Yes, It Has

Imagine getting up in the morning, grabbing a steaming warm cup of coffee, and gazing out your window to see a Washingtonia filifera’s fronds bending under the weight of freshly fallen snow.

Instead of sand and desert flora, you see a blanket of soft white flakes.

Contradicting everything you have been taught about weather in the desert oasis, it has snowed in Palm Springs.

Though definitely not a common occurrence, tiny white snowflakes have covered the desert landscape on numerous occasions over the past few decades.

Perhaps the most recent substantial snow storm took place in 1979, when the flurry made such a mess that schools had to be closed for the day.

However, Mother Nature has blanketed the desert in snow on a few previous occasions between the 1930s and 1980s. Though many desert dwellers have given up hope for the proverbial “white Christmas,” it’s not out of the question as history has taught.

As the city celebrates its 75th anniversary, there is a multitude of ways to learn more about this desert treasure. One of the more intriguing methods is by exploring the city’s history.

The Palm Springs Historical Society will share a story whose time and place corresponds with today.

The Palm Springs Historical is located at 221 S. Palm Canyon Drive. For more information, visit www.pshistoricalsociety.org
