Roy Yamaguchi opened his first Roy's Restaurant in Honolulu in 1988. Since then, the James Beard Award winner has expanded his culinary empire to 31 locations throughout the world and, lucky for us, one of those is right here in Rancho Mirage. You’ll find all of Chef Roy’s world-famous signature dishes, including his incredible seafood specialities, which are made with fresh fish flown in daily from Hawaii. Roy’s Hawaiian fusion style, also known as Pacific Rim cooking, features ingredients from countries such as Japan, China, and Thailand — and everything is prepared using classic French techniques.
When you enter Roy’s, you’ll immediately be enveloped in the restaurant’s comfortable atmosphere and be drawn to the view into the open kitchen. Lovely Hawaiian touches — a bird of paradise painting, a hula dancer poster, and the use of bamboo — can be found throughout the space. These elements are seamlessly combined with an unmistakable local style that includes a rustic stone wall, a beautiful vaulted wood ceiling, and pops of desert hues such as yellow, orange, and turquoise.
Executive Chef Kevin Land stays true to Roy’s vision while adding his own creative, contemporary spin to the menu, which he updates and modifies every month. Chef Land and the restaurant’s entire staff take the time to get to know their customers and the chef is always happy to accommodate special requests from locals who call ahead and ask for a dish they fell in love with that might not currently be on the menu. If you’re a vegetarian, or want to order gluten-free dishes, there’s no need to try and figure out which items might fit your needs. Your server will bring you your very own vegetarian or gluten-free menu. And they didn’t forget the kids. They also get their own menu in a special booklet that contains all sorts of fun games and Hawaiian-style pictures the kids can color in. It’s all just a small part of Roy’s amazing fine dining experience and their warm, Aloha service.
Open daily for dinner 5 to 9 p.m., Sunday through Thursday and 5 to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday.
