Thunderbird Heights New Home is 'Midcentury on Steroids'

Old school look, stellar views, and 21st-Century technology

For those who are looking for a midcentury modern home — but one’s that new and with an amazing view — this could be your dream residence.

Located in the gated Rancho Mirage community of Thunderbird Heights, this home was just completed in January and is being sold completely furnished, except for the artwork. While the exterior exudes that midcentury vibe, the interior is contemporary, and a technology lover’s playground.

“There are more midcentury homes in Thunderbird than anything else, so [the builder] followed that style. It’s a logical fit,” says Cary Gerken, broker/owner of Thunderbird Only Real Estate.

But, he adds, “It’s a midcentury on steroids.”

Pool area: A large open patio at the far end of the pool area is positioned so you never get any wind. It has a heater, a fan, and a fireplace—all on remotes. There’s also has a refrigerator, bar, and grill and there are remote-control-operated fire pits throughout the yard.

One button turns on all the lights in the house and all of the electronics can be operated remotely from a cellphone. There are two built-in iPads (and additional ones can be added) that can be used to run the air conditioning, turn on all the televisions, program music, activate the security cameras — basically anything you can think of. Hit “goodbye” on an iPad and everything in the entire house shuts down.

Yet, one of the home’s most dramatic features is tech-free. Fleetwood sliders that enclose the rear wall of the combined living room, dining room, kitchen space —which has 14-foot ceilings — fold to each side creating a 40-foot-wide opening that overlooks the pool and an incredible valley view.

Outside looking in through open doors to living area: The combined living room, dining room, kitchen space can be completely opened to the outdoors.

“Everyone who walks in just raves when they see that opening,” says Gerken. “You come up here at 4:30 in the afternoon and I can’t get you out of here. The view is to die for."

Gerken adds that he feels the turnkey nature of the home will appeal to buyers.

Living room: The furniture was all purchased in Italy and made for the house which is being sold completely furnished, except for the artwork.

“The people that I seem to deal with don’t want to mess with redoing a house,” he says. “So most people who walk in [here] see what I call a suitcase house —literally bring your suitcase. There are dishes and some stuff in the drawers, enough to get you by so that if you came in here night one, you could eat and sleep. There are even sheets on the bed. We made it as close to livable as we could, yet no one has ever lived in it.”

The home has four bedrooms and four-and-one-half bathrooms, including an 800-square-foot detached casita, spread over 4,966 square feet.

Located at 70188 Sonora Road, the house is currently on the market for $3,497,777.
