Polo Up!

Catch the world’s oldest and fastest team sport at Empire Polo Club in Indio (home of Coachella Music and Arts and Stagecoach festivals). Opening day is Jan. 4. The polo season runs until March 31, with two matches on Sundays at 12 and 2 p.m. On Friday nights through March 29, enjoy polo under the lights with a field-side happy hour beginning at 6 p.m. General admission seating is free and includes bleacher seats and field-side tailgate spots on the east side of the field. Tables are available for groups with a reservation. Cabanas and VIP seats are available for an additional charge. Established in 1987, Empire Polo Club is one of the largest polo clubs on the West Coast with nine polo fi elds and an indoor arena and polo school. Season highlights include the USPA Townsend Cup (Jan. 12) and Polo d’Elegance Charity Match and Gala (March 23).

The Southwest Arts Festival takes place Jan. 25-27 and presents more than 250 artists offering traditional, contemporary, and abstract fine works of art. The event, held at Empire Polo Club in Indio, also functions as the Indio Chamber of Commerce’s largest annual fundraiser. Celebrating its 27th year, the festival has built a reputation for quality and integrity. The 2013 festival poster artist, La Quinta resident Diane McClary, paints in plein-air style characterized by attention to light and color.
