Explore Palm Springs: Mounted Police Rodeo and Parade

Annual event rode into downtown area

After the excitement of the Christmas holidays, children in Palm Springs did not have to wait long for a much-loved tradition – the annual Mounted Police Rodeo and Parade.

The last weekend of January was set aside to honor and raise money to support the Mounted Police.

The weekend event festivities included a ball on Friday night, parade and two-day rodeo. The Palm Springs Lions Club served breakfast al fresco Saturday before the parade.

A Grand Marshall was chosen to lead the parade down Palm Canyon Drive from Tachevah Drive south to Ramon Road. The horses and other participants in the rodeo events continued down Ramon Road until they arrived at the Polo Grounds, located at Sunrise Way and Ramon Road.

At the Polo Grounds, capacity crowds gathered for the thrill of watching cowboys and cowgirls roping, steer wrestling, bareback riding and attempting to ride the bulls and the broncs.

There is a multitude of ways to learn more about this desert treasure, which turned 75 in 2013. One of the more intriguing methods is by exploring the city’s history.

The Palm Springs Historical Society will share a story whose time and place corresponds with today.

The Palm Springs Historical is located at 221 S. Palm Canyon Drive. For more information, visit www.pshistoricalsociety.org
