The Sixth Annual Palm Springs Tennis Championships were held Jan. 11-14, 1940 at the Palm Springs Tennis Club.

Three notable women participated, including actress Ilona Massey, world’s female tennis title holder, Alice Marble, and British tennis star and former world champion Betty Nuthall. 

Miss Marble performed in exhibition matches at the El Mirador Hotel Courts on the final day of the tournament.

There is a multitude of ways to learn more about Palm Springs, which turned 75 in 2013.

One of the more intriguing methods is by exploring the city’s history.

The Palm Springs Historical Society will share a weekly story whose time and place corresponds with today.
