Marilyn Monroe isn't leaving just yet.
The iconic 26-foot tall sculpture in downtown Palm Springs will be around until mid-November after the city received an extension from The Sculpture Foundation and artist Seward Johnson.
“This is very exciting news for Palm Springs and the entire Coachella Valley, and the goal is to create even more events during the additional time Marilyn is here,” said Aftab Dada, chairman of P.S. Resorts. “Since her arrival, 'Forever Marilyn' has been an incredible economic tourism booster for our city and we’re ecstatic she’s staying a while longer.”
P.S. Resorts is hosting the “Forever Marilyn Look-A-Like Contest” at 7 p.m. Aug. 1 at Village Fest at Forever Marilyn Park.
Located on the corner of Tahquitz Canyon and Palm Canyon Drive, "Forever Marilyn" has drawn thousands of Coachella Valley residents and visitors to Palm Springs since its arrival last May. The sculpture had been scheduled to leave in early September.
“The City of Palm Springs is absolutely thrilled that 'Forever Marilyn' will will be staying in town through the fall,” said Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet. “Marilyn has become a Palm Springs icon that truly makes our city like no place else, and residents and visitors from all over the world love and appreciate her. I want to thank The Sculpture Foundation for partnering with us to keep her in town as long as possible.”
