Weekender: Fourth of July, Idyllwild Fashion Show, KC and the Sunshine Band

The holiday weekend starts with a host of Fourth of July activities across the Coachella Valley.


Thursday, July 4

7-10 p.m.: VillageFest will distribute red, white and blue cupcakes for free while supplies last.

7:05 p.m.: Palm Springs Power host the Los Angeles Brewers with the city of Palm Springs fireworks display following at 9 p.m. at Palm  Springs Stadium.

8 p.m.: Folk/soul songwriter Adam Arcuragi, credited with founding Death Gospel, weaves his musical act at Pappy & Harriet's in Pioneertown.

Dinner suggestion: Café Europa owner Michael Stoltz visits France every summer, and then brings back menu ideas for the Palm Springs restaurant. Read our story.

Friday, July 5
6-9 p.m.: Local artists from Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Indio, and Joshua Tree will exhibit their artwork, including sculpting, photography, abstract paints, mixed media paintings all for a good cause at Highest Form Gallery in Palm Springs. A portion of the proceeds from artwork sold will benefit the NestEggg at The Center Food Bank. Read our preview.

7 p.m.: The Idyllwild Arts Summer Program presents a free Native American Fashion Show in the Idyllwild Arts Foundation Theatre. Among the designers is Patricia Michaels, who finished runner-up in Season 11 of Project Runway. Read our preview.

7 p.m.: The Hi-Desert Cultural Center in Twentynine Palms will host the work of playwright Stephen Bittrich's new theatrical comedy, "Home of the Great Pecan", which will run two more weekends at the center's Blak Box Theater. Bittrich's outlandish tale focuses on UFOs and romance in Seguin, Texas in the mid-1980s.

7 p.m.: The St. Joseph's Players present "Steel Magnolias" at the St. Joseph of Arimathea Church's Rusack Parish Hall, 56312 Onaga Trail, Yucca Valley. Shows again at 7 p.m. July 6,  2 p.m. July 7.

7:05 p.m.: The Palm Springs Power host the High Desert Heat at Palm Springs Stadium.

8 p.m.: Hear your favorite Garth Brooks and Faith Hill songs in this tribute concert at Spotlight 29 Casino in Coachella.

8 p.m.: Knott's Soak City will stay open a few hours after its normal 6 p.m. closing time to bring kids and families its third annual "Dive-In Movie". Tonight's feature is "Despicable Me". The movie season runs through Aug. 23.

8 p.m.: Make your way out to Coachella to support the Tribesmen and their upcoming tour. Presented by The Ghost Channel, there will be live music by the Tribesmen, who you should remember from opening Tachevah back in April, plus Los Mumblers, Fever Dog and Thoughts Contained. The cover is only $3.

Dinner suggestion: Cello's in Cathedral City is collecting canned food and toiletries to donate to the Senior Center in Cathedral City. So bring your appetite and a bag of canned goods during July, and you will receive a free token for a non-alcoholic beverage at lunch.

Saturday, July 6
9 a.m.: All kinds of cool things going on at The Living Desert. The first 200 adults who come to the party with paid admission will receive a free personal-sized cooler filled with bottles of Aquafina water. Plus there are free trackless train rides for the kids, and say the word, "Chill" in the café, grill or gift shop and receive a 10 percent discount.

3 p.m.: Prior to its concert Saturday night, KC and the Sunshine Band will receive its Palm Springs Walk of Stars honor at 144 S. Palm Canyon Drive in front of Sees Candies.

7:05 p.m.: The Palm Springs Power host the High Desert Heat at Palm Springs Stadium.

8 p.m.: Disco fever will hit an all-time high when KC and the Sunshine Band hook up with the Village People on the same stage at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio.

8 p.m.: Hear the sweet sounds of Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye in this Motown Revue Tribute Band concert at Spotlight 29 Casino in Coachella.

9 p.m.: More than a Feeling is what you come away with after listening to Boston, the hit 1970s band. The tribute band hits the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino's Rock Yard stage in Indio at 9 p.m. Cover band Hollywood Blonde starts the evening at 7 p.m. and then returns at 10:30 after the tribute band.

Dinner suggestion: One of the best marinara sauces you'll ever taste is at La Bella Cucina in Palm Desert.

Sunday, July 7
7 a.m. -Noon: College of the Desert Street Fair has summer hours in effect and a new location closer to the entrance off Monterey Ave.

2 p.m.: "The Hebrew Hillbilly", written and performed by singer-songwriter Shelley Fisher in a one-woman show at the Arthur Newman Theatre in The Joslyn Center Theater in Palm Desert. The show chronicles Fisher's path to Hollywood via Memphis, Tenn.

7:05 p.m.: The Palm Springs Power host the East LA Dodgers at Palm Springs Stadium.

Brunch suggestion: Cheeky's in Palm Springs. It's worth the wait. Get your name on the list, take the walk up North Palm Canyon and come back with an appetite only this place can fulfill.

Memo at The Living Desert

Meet Memo at The Living Desert
The Palm Desert park's new resident, Memo the Jaguar, will make his debut from 9-9:30 a.m. July 6 during the Zoo Chill Day events. Memo is nearly 2 years old and weighs 120 pounds. Memo came to Palm Desert from a facility in Panama. The jaguar had been confiscated by Panamanian authorities from a home where it was being raised illegally as a pet.
