Big Deals of the Summer - Places to Go, Things to Do

Indulge in America’s favorite sport (next to golf, of course). The Palm Springs Power baseball team takes the field June 4 and plays throughout the summer.

If you love films, you’ll appreciate free family movies at Old Town La Quinta’s Film Night. 760-777-1770, Screenings take place on the lawn beginning at dusk every first Friday through October. Did you miss Sandra Bullock’s Oscar-winning performance in The Blind Side? Catch it on July 2. Other summer films include Where the Wild Things Are (June 4) and Wall-E (Aug. 6).

Even more movies are on tap at the Palm Springs International ShortFest 800-898-7256  (June 22-28), the largest and most-celebrated event of its kind in North America. Coupon books (available until June 22) are $45 for six screenings, a $15 savings over individual ticket prices.

At the Palm Springs Art Museum 760-325-7186, FREE Summer Films will be screened every Thursday night starting at 5:30 p.m. from May 13 through September 9 in the Annenberg Theater.

Sports fans have a couple of great options. The Palm Springs Power 760-778-4487 baseball team returns to the field on June 4. While all the games are an entertainment bargain ($7 regular admission, $10 includes a hot dog and soda), you might want to mark your calendar for special giveaways, such as free tickets to Knott’s Soak City (June 12) and The Living Desert (July 10).

Another fun spectator sport is polo. Bring lawn chairs or a blanket and watch for free. Empire Polo Club’s summer season 760-342-2762 runs May through August and includes more than 87 matches in the early morning and early evening. Weekend tournaments feature nighttime play and Saturday night barbecues. Club memberships for players run $300 per month through the summer; lessons are available by appointment.

You won’t need to run up your air conditioning bill when you have a Palm Springs Aerial Tramway 760-325-1391summer pass, valid May 1 through Aug. 31 ($60 for adults and $30 for children 3-12 years old). Temperatures at the top of the mountain are about 40 degrees cooler than the desert floor; and with a pass, you could go up every day if you wanted. The pass also entitles holders to a 10 percent discount on additional tram tickets and 10 percent discounts at the mountain station restaurants.

From June through August, Palm Springs Air Museum 760-778-6262 offers a free child’s admission with a paying grandparent on Tuesdays. On Wednesdays, local residents get $2 off adult admission prices; and on Father’s Day (June 21), dads get in free with one paid child’s admission.

If you’re feeling wildly adventurous, Desert Adventures 888-440-5337 can take you on a tour where you’ll see such delights as a natural palm oasis, steep-walled canyons, an Indian village, and an old mining camp with interactive enhancements. Summer rates (June 1-Sept 15) are $89 per person (normally $125) for the morning Jeep tour and $59 per person (normally $75) for the evening wagon tour.
