Finding the right wines to complement gourmet dishes—from hors d’oeuvres to dessert and all the deliciousness that falls in between—is an enviable talent, and one that award-winning chef Jimmy Schmidt has in spades. Schmidt is the mastermind behind the outstanding culinary creations found at Morgan’s in the Desert, the signature restaurant of the legendary La Quinta Resort & Spa.

On June 18, beginning at 6 pm, Schmidt invites gourmands from across the desert to sample a special menu paired with wines from the Quivira Vineyards & Winery, a holistically centered, biodynamic and organic estate in the Dry Creek area of Sonoma County, just north of the Russian River, known for its intense zinfandels and vibrant sauvignon blancs. Menu highlights include pan-seared pastrami cured free-range duck breast paired with 2007 Quivira Zinfandel and roasted double rib chop of Colorado lamb paired with a 2007 Quivira Petit Syrah. Entrees are accompanied by succulent side dishes such as gingered sweat pea and Meyer lemon risotto and black-sandwiched foie crisp. A dessert of blackberry and raspberry pecan brittle crisp with bittersweet chocolate sorbet fits perfectly with Quivira’s petit syrah port.

Celebrated chef Jimmy Schmidt draws inspiration for Morgan’s contemporary American cuisine from the desert environs, sourcing the best local products grown and raised responsibly. Schmidt employs open grilling, slow roasting, braising, pickling and curing, and other traditional cooking methods to create the delectably simple and healthy dishes for which Morgan’s in the Desert is known.

Schmidt’s successful 30-year career includes numerous awards and accolades, most notably the prestigious James Beard Award for “Best Chef Midwest, Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence and Gourmet magazine’s “America’s Top Tables” and “American’s Best Restaurants.” Locally, he’s known for opening the Rattlesnake Club restaurant at Trump Spotlight 29 before taking the culinary helm at Morgan’s.

Morgan’s in the Desert enjoys its own impressive history, taking root in 1926 when Walter H. Morgan invited Hollywood VIPs out to the desert to escape industry pressures and share simpler moments filled with food and friendship. While the valley has grown and shifted into a higher gear, the tradition of excellence and simplicity that is Morgan’s remains—a commitment to good food, good drinks, and good times.
