Just because school’s out for the summer doesn’t mean your kids need to stop learning. And neither do you. The Coachella Valley is crazy about museums, and there are myriad from which to choose.

101 North Museum Drive, Palm Springs
has blossomed from an educational venue focusing on the desert’s natural history to a respected art institution featuring the works of such luminaries as Keith Haring and Robert Mapplethorpe, as well as impressive collections such as the gifts and promised works from Donna and Cargill MacMillan. In addition, PSAM features the Annenberg Theater, which this summer will again screen an outstanding series of free films.

Summer visitors to the museum will be treated to two outstanding exhibitions: Colors of the West: The Paintings of Birger Sandzen, which runs until Sept. 12, showcases more than 60 paintings, watercolors, and prints; and Photographing the American West: Selections from the Permanent Collection, which offers a comparative view of the American West from 1865 to the present. If you’ve got kids who are looking for something fun to do that doesn’t involve television or a Wii, beginning June 22, the museum will be offering a four-day Museum Art Camp for children ages 3 through 12.
