And the wnner is…

A gecko.

Not the one in the insurance ads, but a real one named Princess Peach, who received the most votes to earn the Cutest Pet award in the annual Pets on Parade Contest presented by Palm Springs Life. The Cutest Pet chosen by “most popular votes” from all categories wins a prize valued at $1,000.

Owner Jen Bennett described her pet gecko:

"Peach, our leopard gecko, was adopted from the pet store because she could not be sold. She had three broken legs and its tail was broken off. We brought her home and she does great! We have had her for about eight months now! So beautiful."

The pet chosen for the cover of the August 2014 Palm Springs Life magazine is Roxie Davenport, a 6-year-old Greyhound rescue (pictured at right).

Roxie's owner described her this way:

"All of the classic grace and elegance of a true Desert socialite is embodied in this fantastic 6-year-old Greyhound rescue. I was fortunate enough to find Roxie D at the Orphan Pet Oasis in February of 2014. Since she entered my life, she has been an incredible companion and a great dog. Roxie loves dogs of all sizes, cats, birds, kids and everybody else that she comes across in her daily adventures. Even though Greyhounds known for their incredible running speeds, they are actually docile "45 mile an hour couch potatoes" hence her last name – Davenport – an old school word for sofa. Get it?"

Both pets will be honored at the Pets on Parade luncheon July 13 at the Desert Princess Hotel & Resort. The event is sponsored by Pegasus Therapeutic Riding & Humane Society of the Desert.

"We wish to thank everyone who participated by sharing their “cutest pet” and all of the pet fans who visited, voted and commented about their favorites," says Lisa Laddusaw, marketing director at Palm Springs Life. "The editorial staff at Palm Springs Life considered all of the 'top-rated' entrants carefully in order to make the very difficult selection from each category to determine the pet chosen to appear on the cover of the August 2014 Palm Springs Life magazine."
