Green beer. Corned beef and cabbage. Donning green garb.

That's what St. Patrick's Day is all about, right?

From a celebratory point, yes.

But St. Patrick's Day is historically a commemoration of the patron saint of Ireland on March 17. Patrick was born in England, but was a missionary in Ireland. He reportedly died on March 17.

What started out as a religious holiday became a celebration thanks to Irish Americans. The first St. Patrick's Day parade took place in 1762 in New York.

So here's to us, who know how to throw a good party. Check out these suggestions on where to enjoy some blarneyin the Greater Palm Springs area.

  • Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio. The Fresh Grill and POM will both serve traditional St. Patrick's Day grub. The Fresh Grill has a buffet-style dining, while POM is a little more modern and sit-down.
  • Vue Bar & Grill in Indian Wells. For $25, you get one green beer, a buffet featuring Corned Beef and Cabbage, or Beef Stroganoff, plus Mint Chip Cheese Cake among many selections.
  • What could be more Irish than TK Irish Nachos featuring Guinness Beer Cheese Sauce at Tilted Kilt in Palm Desert. Happy Hour runs all day long starting at 11 a.m.
  • Yard House in Rancho Mirage. Mmmm. Sheperd's Pie. Grilled Corned Beef sandwich. Corned Beef Brisket. Plus a slew of St. Patrick's Day drinks.
