Bill Dwyre and Art Spander, two decorated sports journalists considered leaders in their field, have signed on to handle Palm Spring Life magazine’s online tennis coverage of the BNP Paribas Open.

The tournament opens March 7 and runs through March 20 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Dwyre served as sports editor of the Los Angeles Times from 1981 until he became a columnist in 2006, and retired from the paper last year. He has received the prestigious Red Smith Award for service to sports journalism. Dwyre made his mark when he directed the Times’ coverage of the 1984 Summer Olympics with more than 100 staffers on the event.

He has covered every major sporting event in the country, but writing about tennis is a passion. He won the PNB Paribas Open Merit Award given annually to the top writer at the Indian Wells event, and the U.S. Tennis Writers Association Column of the Year in 2000 for Australia Open coverage.

For Palm Springs Life readers, Dwyre will bring unparalleled access to the best players in the world through daily coverage and tournament updates. He will be on site the entire second week of the tournament, culminating with championship weekend coverage on March 19-20.

Spander is an award-winning sports journalist who spent most of his career with the San Francisco Examiner. He started his career in Los Angeles where he was the beat writer for the Los Angeles Rams and the L.A. Dodgers. Later, he covered USC and UCLA football and basketball.

Spander has covered 42 Masters, 32 Super Bowls, 40 U.S. Open golf tournaments, 29 British Opens, 25 Wimbledons, and 25 Final Fours in college basketball. Amazingly, he has attended 55 consecutive Rose Bowls, first as a spectator, and the last 45 years as a sports journalist.

A lifelong love of sports leads Spander to Indian Wells for the 2016 PNB Paribas Open. He will provide daily coverage during the first week of the tournament starting March 7.
