And Now For Something Completely Different
ANDREW WYATT/JOSHUA TREE MUSIC FESTIVAL
Those with eclectic music tastes — and/or those who enjoy hearing something new — should hightail it to the Joshua Tree Music Festival, May 14-16, 2010
In its eighth year, the festival brings in musicians from around the world. This year’s lineup includes the U.K.’s Stanton Warriors (dance remix), Mexico’s Mexican Institute of Sound (cumbias, boleros, and mariachi tunes with electro-dance effects), D.C.’s Fort Knox Five (funk), St. Croix’s Midnite (reggae trance), New Orlean’s Bonerama (“anything goes” brass), Canada’s Delhi 2 Dublin (mashup electronica with Bhangra and Celtic flavors), San Francisco’s Radio Devi (progressive world groove) and LoCura (reggae, Cuban son, and hip-hop rooted in flamenco), U.K/Nigeria’s Wunmi (Afrobeat fusion), Portland’s Dusu (polyrhythmic Malian), and more.
Park your lawn chair or blanket under 13,000 square feet and just turn 90 degrees from one stage to the other. Also on festival grounds are art installations; a “chill zone” lounge; food, wine, and organic microbrew; free water refills; festival Olympics; and 1,000 square feet of space between the two stages with misters to keep you cool without missing a beat. Music runs continuously from 6 p.m. until past midnight on Friday, 11 a.m. until past midnight on Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
Joshua Tree Lake Campground, five miles north of Highway 62 on Sunfair, Joshua Tree. (877) 327-6265. www.joshuatree-musicfestival.com.
