Five Fun Ways To Be Thrifty

Gypsyland

Gypsyland

David A. Lee

You’ve probably heard the phrase, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” It’s true — especially in the desert. A plethora of places to shop for bargains in the Coachella Valley turns up treasures in almost every corner. Scour the following five places for interesting finds, amazing prices, and bounty you never knew you needed.

Revivals

As part of a chain of five stores located throughout the Coachella Valley and in San Diego, Revivals in Palm Desert carries a great selection of donated and consigned designer clothing for men and women. Savvy shoppers who love saving on some of the finest names in fashion keep an eye out for store sales of special collections. Proceeds benefit Desert AIDS Project. 72750 Dinah Shore Dr., Palm Desert. 760-992-0499; www.revivalsstores.com

Gypsyland

With a clientele ranging from Hollywood celebs and SoCal designers to do-it-yourselfers and grandmothers looking to take a step back in time, Gypsyland has something for everyone. Two side-by-side storefronts literally spill their wares onto a Desert Hot Springs sidewalk, enticing shoppers to explore a vast selection of items that include midcentury furniture and home furnishings, clothing, jewelry, books, records, and tchotchkes. Buy it when you see it. The same items are rarely available by the second or third visit. 66169 Pierson Blvd., Desert Hot Springs. 760-251-0588

Misty’s Consignments

Misty Davis knows a thing or two about running a consignment business. With more than 15 years of experience in the resale world, she opened her eponymous business last fall. Due to heavy early demand, she’s already had to expand. With two buildings located across the parking lot from each other, she now oversees 15,000-plus square feet of fast-moving merchandise to tempt even the most disciplined disciple. Her high-end collection includes fine furniture and antiques, home furnishings, collectibles and fine art, as well as a huge assortment of items for the garden and patio. Prices are generally a fraction of their original cost. 67777 E. Palm Canyon Dr., Cathedral City. 760-770-4663; www.mistysconsignments.com

Angel View Boutique, La Quinta

This full-service thrift shop receives generous donations from area residents, ensuring a constantly changing array of high-end clothing and shoes for men and women (including a great selection of suits and gowns); gently used, tasteful furnishings; and an abundant supply of books, CDs, DVDs, LPs, and even a few 8-tracks. The dozen stores in the Angel View family, located throughout Southern California, benefit Angel View Crippled Children’s Foundation. 79400 Hwy. 111, La Quinta. 760-777-8866; www.angelview.org

Perez Art and Design Center

Tucked in a nondescript, primarily industrial area in Cathedral City is a collection of retail gems collectively known as the Perez Art and Design Center. Carrying mostly midcentury furniture and quality home furnishings, along with a sprinkling of new/reproduction merchandise, the six stores in the complex (Hedge, At- Hom, Buy Design, Colin Fisher Studios, J.P. Denmark, and Spaces) are a modernist collector’s dream. Like most consignment stores, the turnover is fast and furious. Bidding wars are not unheard of as shoppers vie for the same prized item on the sales floor. 68929 Perez Rd., Cathedral City. At-Hom (760-770-4447; www.at-hom.com), Buy Design (760-321-2614; www.buydesignpalmsprings.com), Colin Fisher Studios (760-324-7300; www.colinfisherstudios.1stdibs.com), Hedge (760-770-0090; www.hedgepalmsprings.com), J.P. Denmark (760-408-9147; www.jpantik.com), Spaces (760-770-5333; www.modern-spaces.net)
