Tony Bennett

A Renaissance Man

Tony Bennett

Palm Springs Life Archive

Good music is always in style, and few artists have proven this better than Tony Bennett. Fresh off his Grammy wins this past February — numbers 16 and 17 — Bennett comes to Morongo Casino, Resort & Spa on May 11. Bennett, 85, is the only artist to have a 50-year span of Grammy wins. He took home his first Grammy in 1962, winning Record of the Year for “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.” He topped the charts with his Duets CDs, pairing with other stellar singers ranging from Barbra Streisand to Andrea Bocelli to Lady Gaga. His duet “Body and Soul” with the late Amy Winehouse earned him one of his two 2012 Grammys.

A true Renaissance man, Bennett is also an accomplished visual artist and painter — a self-proclaimed “museum freak” who works under the name Anthony Benedetto, his birth name. (It was desert icon Bob Hope, in fact, who advised the singer back in 1949 to use the stage name Tony Bennett.) Three of Bennett’s works are part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.; his portrait of Duke Ellington is in Washington’s National Portrait Gallery.
