The sun is like a doubled-edged sword.

On the one hand, we celebrate the sun for the gift of beautiful weather it shines upon us for most of the year.

However, it’s important to pay attention to the health of our skin and the effects from those golden rays of sunshine we so adore.

Internationally known Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Andrew Ordon, from the hit CBS series The Doctors, and Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Ritu Chopra, who have offices in Rancho Mirage and Beverly Hills, will share their ideas on prevention, analysis and treatment of skin conditions at 2 p.m. Nov. 15 during the Palm Springs International Health & Fitness Festival at the Palm Springs Air Museum.

The inaugural Heath and Fitnesss Festival runs Nov. 13-15.

Dr. Andrew Ordon (left) and Dr Ritu Chopra say it's important to develop a skin regimen: Moisturizer. Exfoliation. Sun protection.

The interactive festival plans a variety of activities and vendors promoting healthy lifestyle choices for the entire family, including obstacle courses, yoga, educational lectures, culinary wellness and food and wine sampling. A wide variety of vendors will also offer holistic therapies, medical resources, health focused products, and electric vehicles including the BMW i8 and Mercedes-Benz B Class.

Palm Springs Life.com spoke with Dr. Ordun and Dr. Chopra about the importance of skincare as a part of taking care of the body inside and out.

Many people think of dermatologists vs. plastic surgeons for skincare issues. How large a part of your practice is skincare?
Dr. Chopra: “It’s a huge part of our practice. Unlike Dermatologists, we know the skin from the inside and out. We are not only Dermatologists but Surgeons and this gives us an advantage.

The interesting thing is that the foundation for anti-aging is skincare.
1. Nutrition
2. Sleep
3. Skincare.”

Your panel discussion topic revolves around skincare. Is there a focal point that you’d like to address specifically?
Dr. Ordon: “I think you have to look at it two-fold. It’s the preventative to anti-aging and then reversing the affects of damage.”

“The skin is the largest organ in the body and skin cancers are the most common type of cancer.”

What message would you like the participants at this event to walk away with?
Dr. Chopra: “The most important thing is to get a skin regimen that you will stick to: Moisturizer. Exfoliation. Sun protection. If you can do that…you are way ahead of the game.”

Why do you think this message is important for the Coachella Valley in particular?
Dr. Ordun: “People in the Coachella Valley have an active lifestyle. They play golf, tennis…hike.  That’s why we are in the desert. We love the climate for activities. But we get exposed to the elements. UV Rays. The wind. People, in general, take care of themselves and adding skincare and skin management to that, as Dr. Chopra alluded to, starts with basic skincare, cleansing, and protection from sun.”

What is the most common skincare issue you see here, locally, in the desert?
Dr. Ordun: “It depends on the age group. All that being said, it’s the process of aging combined with sun damage.”

Dr. Chopra: “People really don’t know how harmful UVA/(UVRay’s) are harmful to the skin.”

Dr. Ordun: “The skin is the largest organ in the body and skin cancers are the most common type of cancer.”

Dr. Chopra: “We all talk about beauty, but it is more about saving yourself from different skin cancers and the bi-product is you age better.”
