PICK YOUR STYLE

Face shape should influence your mustache style, Barry Nadeau, owner of brush Palm Springs, says. “For a square face, go for a heavy mustache with the ends extending beyond the corners of the mouth to give a slight downward look. If your face is more oval, opt for a slightly triangular shape with a medium width.”

HAVE PATIENCE

“Letting a mustache grow is a process, and it takes about three or four weeks to get to a length where you can do something with it,” says Roman Ocelo, owner of Luigi’s Old Style Barber Shop in Palm Springs. Mustache and beard trims are complimentary with haircuts at Luigi’s, while traditional hot shaves are also on the menu. “The proper trim between the nose and the upper lip is critical to pulling off a well-polished mustache,” Ocelo says.

KEEP IT MOISTURIZED

Once you’ve grown out your moustache, moisturizing is essential to keeping your look groomed. “A lot of times, people use plastic combs, but that strips away the natural oils from the hair,” says Eddie Jiminez, manager of The Art of Shaving. Jiminez recommends beard oils for moisturizing both the hair and the skin and a mustache comb made of horn, all of which can be found at his Palm Desert store.

KEEP IT TRIMMED

Kery Gutierrez, who formerly worked at The Art of Shaving in Beverly Hills, is a master of mustache maintenance at J. Russell! The Salon in Palm Desert. Gutierrez includes mustache trims for clients getting haircuts, but many opt for the salon’s pampering Royal Shave, which gets your mustache in top shape with pre-oils, a hot lather, hot towel treatment, and a cold lavender towel.

GROW A BEARD

A mustache isn’t complete without a beard, according to stylist Fred Herdt at Salon 119 in Palm Springs. “A mustache on its own can make you look older than you are,” Herdt says. When it comes to maintaining your facial hair, Herdt recommends a good mustache and beard oil and conditioner. He adds, “Use a comb to direct it in the right direction, and have it trimmed periodically to expose the line of the upper lip.”
