An Elegant Setting With Affordable Cuisine
This atmospheric restaurant was legendary before it opened, ensconced in one of Palm Springs’ most appealing Spanish Colonial buildings. It arrives with good genes, being the longtime address of the very popular, but recently closed, Cedar Creek Inn. Owners Ed Bieler and Richard Holdaway have created a new restaurant concept but retained talented Chef Jorge Mendez, who keeps old favorites on the menu.
Today’s diners are in for a revelation when they realize that first-rate food can be served in an elegant setting and yet remain affordable. Here is a rare example of value exceeding price, a concept meant to build a base of satisfied customers who return frequently and appreciate dining in luxury without breaking the bank.
Matching that concept, the surroundings feel both relaxed and sumptuous. Comfortable tapestry chairs and draperies imbue the high-ceilinged, plant-filled spaces with a warm intimacy. The menu mirrors a similar integration of European classic and California casual cuisine. Salads, a strong suit in the former restaurant, retain trump-card status. A simple dinner salad of butter lettuce garnished with carrot threads, dressed in lighter-than-air Roquefort dressing, could stand alone, but paired with Baby Back Ribs slow-smoked, slick with Creek House BBQ sauce and falling off the bone, makes a winning hand.
Marsala Scaloppine sautéed in a wild mushroom reduction and Alaskan Halibut topped with mango salsa highlight a medley of refreshened classics. The broad menu offers daily-changing soup selections, signature sandwiches, a range of pasta dishes, and specialties, plus a potpourri of side selections.
Killer desserts exemplify the chef ’s steady hand. The best: Coconut Cake, moist, studded with walnuts, glazed and dolloped with soft cream; Apple Pie enriched by a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream, and traditional Tiramisú.
The Old Creek House slogan, “Food and prices like they should be,” translates as a family-friendly restaurant offering a wealth of ambiance and affordable dining — and no gamble on its predictably fine quality. Choose breakfast, lunch or dinner, and stop at the bar for a favorite glass of wine, beer, or specialty espresso coffee. Pay the check, and find a surprise: more greenbacks than coins left in your wallet.
“Food and prices like they should be is Old Creek House slogan, offering a wealth of ambiance and affordability.”
