Palm Springs Art Museum Presents an Unparalleled Season

Greater Palm Springs CVB

Pablo Picasso said, “Good artists borrow, great artists steal.” This cheeky quote colors the first exhibition to open simultaneously at Palm Springs Art Museum and Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Desert.

Beg Borrow and Steal (Feb. 13-June 2, 2013) brings together artists from several generations whose works forgo the hunt for new visuals, seeking instead an inventive use of existing images, signs, and cultural symbols. The exhibition includes paintings, sculptures, photographs, and videos by 58 artists from the Rubell Family Collection/Contemporary Arts Foundation, with an emphasis on artists working on the West Coast. The collection embodies visual dialog among internationally recognized artists who share a use of appropriated imagery. Their works contribute to the discussion of how borrowing — and stealing — can be a comment on the past while creating something new.

Another exhibition appearing at Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Desert, which opened to great community appreciation last year, is Make It Work: Material and Form in Passionate Pursuit (Oct. 13-Jan. 20, 2013). This fascinating exhibition introduces fashion designs inspired by significant modern and contemporary works culled from the museum’s collection, which influenced members of the American Society for Interior Designers, who then created runway sensations for 2010 Fashion Week El Paseo.

In October, Palm Springs Art Museum weaves together an enticing look at Native American art in Woven Together: Art and Design in Southwest Indian Textiles (Oct. 20-Dec. 30). Drawn from the museum’s permanent collection, the exhibition presents Navajo, Pueblo, and Hopi blankets, rugs, and pictorial weavings dating from the late 1800s. Also included are examples of basketry, pottery, and kachinas.

One of the more exciting exhibitions, particularly for lovers of innovative interior design elements and furnishings, is Antibodies: The Works of Fernando and Humberto Campana 1989-2009 (Nov. 10-Feb. 24, 2013). Appearing in Palm Springs, the collection created by the Campana brothers reflects the exuberant culture of their native Brazil. Using materials such as paper, wire, plastic, fabric, felt, carpet, rubber, and wood, the furniture makers/artists deliver whimsical, contemporary, yet structurally complex pieces and artwork, incorporating furniture prototypes, photographs and objects collected by the designers. Their work has appeared worldwide in major museums, including MoMA and the London Design Museum.

Fans of artist Robert Rauschenberg will delight in the Rauschenberg at Gemini Exhibition (March 16-June 23, 2013), which showcases a variety of prints produced at Gemini G.E.L., where Rauschenberg pushed the boundaries of printmaking. The exhibition features 51 works plus a series of photographs capturing Rauschenberg at work.
