In September 1948 after a summer of production, the Wee Willager Weekly staff announced they were putting their publication to bed for the season.
The staff was composed of four local Palm Springs students, who had to return to school in the fall. Staff members ranged in age between 10 and 13.
Editor Sandra Brott, assistant editor Sue Cooper, ad rep Buzz Brott and reporter Laney Cooper had a successful second year of production with subscriptions doubling. The paper ran articles on a variety of topics including local news and interviews with prominent community members.
In an article on accident safety, Palm Springs Police Chief Gus Kettman invited Cooper to ride along. Kettman said to prevent accidents, he advised never swimming or biking alone.
Advertising ran under the heading, “Paid Ads.” The cost to place an ad was two cents a word and Buzz said, “We don’t charge for street numbers, but maybe we will next year.”
As Palm Springs celebrates its 75th anniversary, there are a multitude of ways to learn more about this desert treasure. One of the more intriguing methods is by exploring the city’s history.
Weekly, the Palm Springs Historical Society will share a story whose time and place corresponds with today.
