Palm Desert Athena Awards - Oct. 28, 2009
Outstanding women recognized

Two women who have contributed to the future of Palm Desert were recognized with the prestigious 2009 Athena Award at Desert Willow Golf Resort on Oct. 28. Those honored were Joan Busick, founder of the Girlfriend Factor, a non profit organization that has distributed nearly $70,000 in educational grants to more than 40 women, and Kajsa Thuresson-Frary who helped create the McCallum Theatre Institute which since its inception in 1997 has introduced more than a quarter-million Coachella Valley schoolchildren to the fine arts.
In addition, College of the Desert student Becky Davis and Cal State San Bernardino Palm Desert Campus student Danette Delgado were this year’s scholarship recipients. Becky Davis received $1,000 sponsored by past ATHENA recipients. Danette Delgado received $2,500 sponsored by Burrtec Waste & Recycling Services. Both girls emphasized the importance of education and how education had and continues to impact their lives.
The Palm Desert Athena Awards are presented annually by the city of Palm Desert and First Bank. Recipients are selected for their professional excellence, community service, and assistance to women achieving their leadership potential. Palm Desert Council member Jean Benson chaired the luncheon and emcee was Amy Ammons. Flowers by Veronica received special recognition.
