The ninth annual Hats Off Luncheon, a benefit for Shelter From The Storm, attracted 240 guests to the Miramonte Resort & Spa. The event was given by the newly formed Sheltering Sisters, an auxiliary of Shelter From The Storm. Lynn Moriarty, Executive Director, explained that as a result of state economic shortages, California has cut funding for organizations that provide shelter for victims of domestic violence. “Shelter From The Storm is the only safety net for victims of domestic violence in the 840 square mile Coachella Valley, and our state funding has been cut 100 percent,” she said.

Maggie Montez is founding president of Sheltering Sisters. Other founding members are Karen Moller, vice president, Connie Golds, secretary, Susie Harvey, treasurer, and Roberta Downey, Melanie Hinrichs, Marhelith Lopez, Katie Slimco, Kate Spates, and Janette Temple. Kevin McGuire is president of Shelter From The Storm, Irwin Golds, president-elect, Steven Bloomquist, vice-president, Robert J. Bates, treasurer, and Mary Heckmann, PhD, secretary.

Shelter From The Storm’s five program sites include a 72-bed Emergency Shelter, a Transitional Shelter, a Community Counseling Center, and Assistance with Orders of Protection, and three Outreach Centers across the Coachella Valley. Together, these programs provide comprehensive family support services for over 2,000 domestic violence victims annually.
