Stroke Recovery Center, the nation’s only free, comprehensive stroke and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) recovery center, hosted a groundbreaking and reception today for the Clarice and Luhr Jensen Exercise Therapy Facility. Numerous local dignitaries and Center supporters were in attendance.

The state-of-the-art exercise therapy facility will be constructed at the existing Stroke Recovery Center facility and campus, located at 2800 East Alejo Road in Palm Springs, and will support the Stroke Recovery Center's core mission while accommodating future growth. The 2,900 square-foot building, while not fully funded as yet — has attracted many generous private donations, and is seeking partners to complete the expansion by the end of 2014.

“Our facility will be one of the most modern in the Coachella Valley, and represents our continued commitment to providing challenged patients with the finest services and programs possible,” says Beverly Greer, CEO of Stroke Recovery Center. “More than half of the current donations have come from patients and their families, and this incredible generosity makes it possible for recovery in a quality environment with the latest equipment and technology available.”

Stroke Recovery Center officials cite the contribution of the Jensen family as being pivotal part of the facility’s completion. The building will be named in honor of Luhr and Clarise Jensen, parents of Center client Phil Jensen.

“I felt it was important to give something back to the organization that has helped me tremendously since my own stroke several years ago,” says Phil Jensen, a part-time resident of Palm Springs. “I believe in helping others when you can, and it just feels good to be in a position to do that for those who are in the same position as I was not too long ago.”

The Center currently serves close to 300 clients per year, with 10,200 client visits annually. All of the Center’s clients participate in recreation/socialization therapy programs, and all therapy is free of charge.

Founded in 1978 by Dr. Irving Hirshleifer, the Stroke Recovery Center offers long-term rehabilitation to the survivors of stroke and TBI, along with support for their families, caregivers, and loved ones. Services are structured to each client’s need and also include counseling, education, nutrition, socialization, and just plain fun. All services are free, since insurance coverage does not currently exist for the long-term treatment of stroke or TBI.
