2010 Discovery Home Tour - Ashe Residence

Designer: Jeffrey Jones

The owner of this home wanted to meld interior and exterior living areas. Glass pocket walls allow him to entertain in one large space.

The open kitchen leads to two large seating areas. Architectural shelving creates display space for artifacts from the owner’s travels abroad. Metal bamboo detailing is recalled in different applications.

The highlight of this residence is the 120-by-90-foot pool, the equivalent of four standard pools. The pool area — covering 8,800 square feet, including the pool house — features elements purchased and disassembled in Thailand and rebuilt on site. The thatchedroof eating area seats up to eight and includes all of the appliances typically found in a modern kitchen. The “retreat” features a swim-up bar and adjacent fire pit.

The pool includes three beach entries and a traditional Thai bridge to a center island with four fire pits. All areas are illuminated by concealed lighting, and music is pumped into the yard through hidden speakers.

Three islands and the surrounding nine-hole putting green are garnished with elaborate tropical specimen landscaping. Water flows from bamboo pipes, and the sculpture garden includes Buddha heads, full-body sculptures, and other items collected in Thailand.

This project received a Golden Nugget award for best resident over 7,000 square feet. Holden Johnson Architects of Palm Desert is the architect of record.
