Sit, Stay, Sleep

This dog bed is right at home with dogs and their owners who live modern
“You probably shouldn’t sit on that,” the shopkeeper warned as we took this pet bed by George from its corner of the store and off to our photo shoot with Lilly, my English Setter mix. “It’s so comfortable, you’re liable to fall asleep on it. I know; I’ve done it!” Not only is this dog bed’s vintage-inspired fabric — an orange-and-cream mélange of breeds, bones, balls, and bowls — a peppy complement to retro interiors, but it also contains a cushy, down-like mattress that pets and masters may fight over come naptime. (We did end up sitting on it, just to check it out for ourselves.) What’s more, the outer shell unzips for easy laundering and even the mattress is washable, as it is encased within a protective shell. Designed for comfort in three sizes, Lilly models the large, 42-inch round; $240. Available at The Good Dog Bakery & General Store, 1506 S. Palm Canyon Dr., Palm Springs, 327-5227, www.thegooddogonline.com.
Things have come a long way since The Brady Bunch’s boxy, wood-and-aluminum-siding doghouse for their beloved Tiger. Haggar’s Mid-Mod Dog Houses come in three time-tested rooflines — Butterfly, Accordion, and A-frame — and can be customized through style and colors to match your own architecturally significant home. Created by interior designer Keith Burke and named after his Old English sheepdog, Haggar, the homes are crafted of materials that can withstand the desert climate. Each house stylishly utilizes a pressed concrete roof and base and vinyl sideboards for the utmost in durability. Here’s an innovation you won’t find in your own house: the roof opens up for easy cleaning. Wouldn’t Alice be tickled pink?! (Versions can be made as fully enclosed storage units for pool or garden supplies for those without canine companions.) Prices start at $2,500 and a portion of the proceeds benefit The Friends of Palm Springs Animal Shelter. Available for custom order exclusively at Stray Dog Designs, 67-772 E. Palm Canyon Dr., Cathedral City, 328-0648.

Small dogs love to curl up safe in the arc of the Wowo Dog Pod by Glenn Ross of Vurv Design. Part Space Age, part midcentury, this curl of a pet bed (cats love it, too) uses bent ply in your choice of six veneers to create a piece of furniture not out of place in an Eames-and-Noguchi-clad living room. The curving, C-shaped pod has solid wood legs and comes with a fuzzy removable pad that’s washer-friendly. Available in walnut (shown), bamboo, maple, cherry, jatoba, and white oak; $535. (The company also makes feeding stations of the same materials.) Visit www.vurv.ca, or contact Modern Tails Luxury Pet Boutique at (877) 399-4645 or www.moderntails.com.
