Dr. Charles Block Residence

Palm Springs - A two-story estate combines a family legacy for craftsmanship, fine art, and jaw-dropping design

Originally completed in 1985 (with a total renovation completed in 2006), this 13,000-square-foot desert home was conceived and crafted in a style inspired by the body of work of Frank Lloyd Wright. With literally thousands of feet of solid oak, redwood, and mahogany standing in stark contrast to the clean lines of hand-painted concrete floors, white carpet, and floor-to-ceiling windows, the organic balance and harmony of these contrasting elements create a warm, inviting backdrop for living.

The home was originally designed and built by Dr. Charles Block’s father, Charles Robert Block. Dr. Block has just completed a three-year interior and exterior renovation that retains the rich textures and architectural lines embodied in his father’s original design, while adding modern elements to complement and enrich his current lifestyle and interests.

The majesty of this home engulfs guests from the moment the entry gates swing open. Fountain pools flank the approach to the magnificent mahogany and beveled-mirror front door. This marriage of mirror and wood carries into the main living area, where walls of the 3,000-square-foot, two-story living room present tall, clean lines of dark, triple-layered mahogany interspersed with beveled mirror and two-story windows. As a counterpoint to the beautiful woods are the concrete floors — hand-painted in earth tones that match the extensive marble accents throughout the house — and the white Berber carpet leading to the sunken living room. This area serves as a studio for the former cosmetic dentist and oral and maxillofacial surgeon, who now devotes much of his time to another passion: fine art photography and printmaking. His work is displayed throughout the home using mounting hardware he designed so that the art can be exchanged freely without marring or damaging the walls.
The expansive main kitchen is fully equipped with top-of-the-line Wolf commercial appliances. Views from the kitchen and dining areas capture the waterfalls and pools of the outdoor living area. The custom-made dining room table features exotic woods from South America and Africa beautifully inlaid with marble and designed to seat up to 12 for formal dining. Beyond the living area is the gallery displaying poster-sized and larger-than-life photos taken and printed by Dr. Block of his models, favorite travels, and family. Off the gallery lies the
master suite, sports court, gym, theater, and spacious pool area. On the second level sits his office, guest area, an additional master suite, and a 2,000-square-foot sundeck offering 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains and nearby Indian Canyons. Hidden from view on the rooftop are 168 photovoltaic solar panels and 210 gallons of solar-heated water, providing essentially all the energy and hot water needs of this spectacular desert home. Architecture is by Lance O’Donnell and Martin Brunner. Interior Design is by Jill Mincer & Associates.
