Blackbird Interiors

Palm Springs Interior DesignersBob Call & Kathy Blackbird

Add the two-person team of Blackbird Interiors to the list of people who spend so much time commuting to the area that they’ve started to consider a satellite shop here. Five years ago, builder Judy Allen saw one of Blackbird Interior’s model homes in Palm Desert and contacted them about doing a spec home at Bighorn Golf Club. Since then, this design duo — Blackbird takes over much of the design while Call tackles the duties of a contractor — has been increasingly dabbling in desert design, much of it in Bighorn.

“We get a lot of inspiration from the desert,” Blackbird says. “I like to use textural fabrics of organic materials done in the muted colors of the landscape. Then I bring in more vibrant colors with the artwork. We work with artists in California, Washington, and Oregon, and it’s fun to bring all of these artists and their different styles together.”

In the Bighorn home shown here, the artwork comes in the form of a dazzling light source just inside the front door that looks like iridescent icicles caught in the act of melting. “We are always on the hunt for that special lighting fixture that will set a house apart,” Blackbird says. She started with the chandelier for the entryway, but loved the affect and soon added the complementary sconces to glitter and reflect off the mirror in the powder room. “They were done by an artist in Spain and assembled in Portugal before we found them in Vegas. It was a quite a hunt but so worth it.”

Lighting isn’t the only distinction in a Blackbird home. The walls themselves speak to Blackbird’s talent for extending the design to every surrounding surface. “I love wall finishes. In the master bedroom of this home, we did a multilayer process using metallics and glazes. Then we used antique silver leaf to make it look like individual squares of copper.” In the master bathroom, a curving wall of resin panels by 3form with a blades-of-grass pattern artfully sets off the shower, bordered by a trough of river rocks. A wall of glass brings the outdoors in.

Because its clients have been asking for details like this that evoke calm and exude serenity, Blackbird Interiors works hard to make the bathrooms especially peaceful and comforting. “We like to use limestone slab instead of granite slab in the bathroom,” Blackbird says. “It’s more soothing and almost surreal. Soaking tubs are also big right now — anything to make it feel more like a spa.”

This huband-wife team does spec homes, model homes, turnkey homes, and residential work that takes them throughout California, Arizona, Nevada, and Hawaii. But no matter where they are designing, or for which type of project, Blackbird aims for each home and every room in it to have a nurturing quality. “When the owners walk in, they can feel it,” she says. “They know right away that, in this home, they will be taken care of.”
