As Tim Clark and Daniel Wright celebrate their 10th year together at Wright Design, they have to laugh. When their midcentury work received the International Gold Nugget Award of Merit for the “Best Renovated, Restored Single House or Project” and was published in Palm Springs Life in 2001, they were dubbed “Alexander Revivalists” and pegged by many as midcentury designers. In actuality, the team has run up and down the gamut of styles and loves to surprise people by mentioning that their place in Laguna Beach is in a full-blown cottage style. “But it’s still funky,” adds Wright.

While Clark, a licensed general contractor, handles project management and runs the business side, Wright is the driving creative force. An Allied Member ASID and California state licensed Certified Interior Designer, he has more than 20 years of experience in the biz. Wright started off with the big dogs in New York City, where he graduated from Fashion Institute of Technology before opening his own business. He later moved to Laguna Beach before landing in Palm Springs. Designing both in and out of the region comes naturally to someone with a cross-coast background. “We’ve taken on projects as far away as Paris,” says Wright. “Some American friends of ours bought a place there, so we spent 18 months going back and forth, which was a blast.”

Known for being eclectic, Wright says, “I like to play with new color combinations. I’ll experiment and think, ‘This could be great!’

I don’t like to repeat anything. Otherwise, it becomes a cookbook. Let’s pull out recipe No. 41 and tweak the color. We don’t do that.”

The owner of the Palm Desert home shown here asked Wright Design to create a dark bedroom infused with old Hollywood glamour and a loungey feel that would harken back to his roots growing up in Beverly Hills. Wright says the indigo blue and apple-acid green color combination would have been too intense for most. But the homeowner loved every detail — from the Shag print and glass mosaic around the fireplace to the costume sketches from Alfred Hitchcock’s “Marnie” and black-and-white prints of a martini-toting Margo Channing. The antique chaise was a family heirloom that Wright Design recovered in ultra suede. A pile of pillows makes a plush place to relax in front of the fireplace, a touch befitting Wright’s mantra: “If it’s not comfortable, don’t even bother.”

Quite often in their projects, the fun colors and drama extend to every room in the house, a look that Wright favors. “With a second home, you have a lot more freedom. You can have the fantasy house,” he says. And in any home, he believes in turning up the design volume in the guest room. “You don’t want them to stay too long, anyway.”

Right now, hot pink has been popping up a lot for Wright Design. One current project involves a den done up in different shades of pink. “I see a lot of white, white, white projects right now,” says Wright. “I’m just not a Zen person. It’s boring to me.”
