ABOUT THE COVER: Noted desert artist Val A. Samuelson's eloquent composite interpretation of Puccini's "Madama Butterfly" predominantly places the figures of Cio-Cio-San and Lt. B.F. Pinkerton in the colorful gardens of a hilltop home overlooking Nagasaki, setting for the opera. The celebrated Atsuko Azuma will sing the title role in the San Diego Opera Company's production of "Madama Butterfly" to be presented March 15 by Palm Springs Opera Guild of the Desert. (See "Music on the Desert," beginning on page 63.)
