By Janet Lawver-Vafai
Dr. Vafai is passionate about his patients, his work, and his practice. He takes a considerable amount of time getting to know every patient and discusses their clinical problems with them. He truly believes that the most important part of every patient’s care is the understanding of their underlying disease. This allows his patients to participate in their own care and feel that they are an integral part of their own treatment.
Dr. Vafai and his associate provide cutting-edge and up-todate cancer and blood disorder treatments. Dr. Vafai believes that this is an exciting time with new and emerging treatment modalities for the patient. One such emerging treatment is targeted therapies. These therapies adjust the communication pathways through signals and processes either within the cell or on the cell surface to halt tumor growth. We can also look to the future for disease-specific cancer vaccines that stimulates the patient’s immune system to attack the cancer cells. Although many of these vaccines are still in the experimental phase, Dr. Vafai believes that “through research, we can find new advances in the way patients are treated for cancer.” We offer clinical trials for the patient to enroll in.
Dr. Vafai is also the primary investigator at Lucy Curci Cancer Center for the International Early Lung Cancer Action Program. This is a very important and vital international study in which more than 50 international centers around the world are participating to prove the fact that lung cancer can be a curable disease by early detection and treatment.
Dr. Vafai believes “that the trajectory of the cancer experience is multidimensional for the patient, spouse, and caregiver; therefore, it is important to not only recognize these dimensions, but to offer and refer the individual to specialized support groups.” The clinic offers monthly support groups for men, women and caregivers. These meetings are well received by patients and their families in the community.
DR. WADE SMITH
Dr. Vafai and his associate, Dr. Wade Smith, M.D., provide comprehensive oncology and hematology care in their new state-of-the-art building and infusion center. The infusion center provides chemotherapy and injection services. Other services offered are antibiotic infusion therapy and Coumadin monitoring.
Dr. Wade Smith is a board-certified medical oncologist and hematologist who in 2005 returned to his native Southern California after completing his fellowship training at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga.
He has experience in treating all types of solid tumors, in addition to both benign and malignant blood disorders. His specific areas of interest include cancers of the digestive system as well as of the head and neck. He believes the art of medicine has to do with one basic reality: No two patients are alike. An individualized cancer-care plan requires factoring in a multitude of variables. While targeting a cancer with the latest in non-chemotherapy “smart drugs” as well as traditional treatments, one must also seek to optimize the patient’s overall well-being. Such a strategy places heavy emphasis on maintaining a good nutritional status, satisfactory energy level, and as encouraging necessary emotional/spiritual support from the patient’s family and social network.
Dr. Smith’s close collaboration with Dr. Vafai enables him to offer a comfortable, familiar setting for the patient, while also allowing for optimal oversight and close continuity of care. He is also affiliated with a hospital-based clinical research program that provides an opportunity for patients to choose from state-of-the art, investigational cancer-treatment options.
