JFK Memorial Hospital is ranked in the top 10 percent in the nation and earned five-star ratings in knee and hip replacement as well as hip fracture treatment for 2014 by HealthGrades. For the past three years running, the hospital also received a HealthGrades Award of Excellence for Joint Replacement.
JFK continues to invest in new technology to keep patient satisfaction high. One of the most recent examples is the VeraSense Knee System by OrthoSensor. JFK is the first hospital in the Inland Empire to offer this technology, which assists orthopedic surgeons with soft-tissue balancing during knee replacement.
“The VeraSense Knee System provides real time feedback, allowing the surgeon to make evidenced-based decisions intraoperatively,” said Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon Ghassan E. Boghosian, D.O. “Prior to this, there’s never been a way for surgeons to calibrate the load-bearing forces on each side of the knee or verify appropriate component positioning. It’s been a ‘feels good gestalt.’ This device now gives us a quantifiable measure of how to check the balance. It takes the guesswork out and transforms it to a science,” said Dr. Boghosian.
Ben Olson, 67, of La Quinta, had a knee replacement this past May by Dr. Boghosian that was balanced with the VeraSense Knee System. “I attended a seminar and that’s when I learned about this new technique with OrthoSensor,” he said. A civil engineer who has operated his own engineering firm in Indio for 38 years, Olson said, “I am interested in angles and dangles and the like. I was very impressed with this approach to knee replacement and I’m very happy with my progress.” Olson is looking forward to resuming his passion for fly-fishing this summer and skiing this winter.
In a multi-center study of the VeraSense with 135 patients and eight contributing surgeons, 97 percent of quantifiably balanced patients rated their satisfaction as “satisfied to very satisfied” at the one-year mark – a significantly higher satisfaction rate than the national average of 81 percent as reported in literature among “unbalanced” knee replacement patients.
Dr. Boghosian is the first physician to adopt this technology at JFK. He trained on the system for more than a year before implementing it into his practice and has been utilizing the VeraSense Knee System at JFK regularly since March 2014. A Cleveland Clinic fellowship-trained surgeon, Dr. Boghosian performs about 350 hip and knee replacements annually, including approximately 200 total knee replacements.
Balance is essential in life, in work, and in knee replacement. The new OrthoSensor technology is just one more way JFK Memorial Hospital is demonstrating its commitment to improving patient satisfaction.
