Desert Cardiology Center
Providing the highest standard of excellence in cardiovascular care
A Special Advertorial Feature
By Stephanie Brown
Our mission at Desert Cardiology Center is quite simply to provide the highest standard of excellence in cardiovascular patient care.
Located on the campus of one of “America’s 100 Best” hospitals, we are the largest single specialty private practice in the Coachella Valley. Our premier group is comprised of 13 cardiologists who are all board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Each of our physicians was selected for their ability to add to the collective focus of our diagnostic and treatment team.
In the field of cardiology, our dedicated physicians represent many of the subspecialties at the forefront of state-of-the-art cardiovascular care, reducing patient morbidity and mortality, including:
• On January 17, 2008, only one day after approval by the Federal Drug Administration, electrophysiologists Andrew Rubin, M.D., and Leon Feldman, M.D., were the first physicians in Southern California to utilize St. Jude Medical Center’s innovative computer software EnSite Fusion. This innovative computer software helps physicians produce more detailed images of the heart. This advancement in CT imaging enhances 3-D images of the heart and allows for earlier diagnosis and treatment of abnormal heart rhythms, including atrial fibrillation.
• In conjunction with Eisenhower Medical Center, Puneet Khanna, M.D., a board certified Interventional cardiologist, was the first physician in the United States to utilize the Mynx Vascular Closure Device. Dr. Khanna was a part of the team that designed this medical breakthrough device, which is designed to seal the femoral artery (the main artery of the thigh) after cardiac catheterization procedures like angioplasty or angiograms, providing a painless and efficient way to allow the patient to move sooner and become ambulatory.
• The American Board of Clinical Lipidology recently awarded Dr. Charlie Schaeffer diplomat status, one of only 180 physicians from across the United States who has earned this credential. As a lipidologist, Dr. Schaeffer specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of cholesterol disorders, which lead to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is responsible for approximately one-third of all deaths in the United States.
The only board-certified electrophysiologists in the valley, Andrew Rubin, M.D., and Leon Feldman, M.D., have established an electrophysiology program at Eisenhower Medical Center offering the latest in curative therapy for atrial fibrillation and other cardiac arrhythmias, in addition to serving as a nationally recognized training program for pacemaker implantation. Our board-certified interventional cardiologists — Barry Hackshaw, M.D.; Khoi Le, M.D.; and Puneet Khanna, M.D. — are also recognized as regional leaders in the training of new cardiac catheritization techniques and peripheral arterial interventions, including orbital atherectomy.
Patient education and community service are an integral component of our commitment to excellence in patient care. Our physicians have journeyed as far away as Vietnam and India to volunteer their cardiovascular care services. In our own community, they serve on the board of directors of the Desert Chapter of the American Heart Association; provide free echocardiogram testing at the annual Desert Heart Walk, and give communitybased lectures on general and specialized cardiovascular care to numerous groups, clubs, and societies. In 2006, the American Heart Association awarded Charlie Schaffer, M.D., past president of the medical staff at Eisenhower Medical Center, the Volunteer Advocate of the Year Award for his contributions to obesity prevention, tobacco control, and heart disease and stroke prevention research funding projects.
At Desert Cardiology Center, our diagnostic testing facilities are located on-site for the convenience of our patients. We are proud to have been one of the first practices in the state of California to meet the rigorous accreditation standards of ICANL for our nuclear laboratory, overseen by our board certified nuclear cardiologists, Eric Sontz, M.D., Philip Patel, M.D., and Philip Shaver, M.D. We offer four exercise stress testing areas, a completely digital vascular laboratory and a state-of-the art, all digital echocardiography laboratory.
Our physicians, including Thomas Murphy, M.D., Damon Kelsay, M.D., Lester Padilla, M.D., and Brom Beckerman, M.D. serve the residents of the Coachella Valley with a full spectrum of cardiovascular services. We treat all forms of heart disease, including peripheral artery disease, valvular heart disease, and rhythm disorders in our pacemaker and defibrillator clinic. Our participation in nationally recognized cardiac research trials, including several N.I.H. — sponsored research protocols and the upcoming trial for the Xience stent, ensures that our patients have the most up-to-the-minute data and resources available in cardiovascular care.
Our programs for outpatient management include preventive cardiology with hypertension and cholesterol management; an anti-coagulation clinic; and convenient, same-building access to the Eisenhower Medical Center Glickman Heart Failure Clinic and cardiovascular rehabilitation through the Renker Wellness Center.
We are located in the Hal B. Wallis Building on the campus of Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage. Our facility offers compassionate patient care and state-of-the art technology with the most respected and experienced physicians and clinical specialists in the valley.
