Our 50th Season!

Welcome to the Palm Springs Life Desert Living Edition — our annual celebration of the bright, colorful California desert lifestyle. In April 2008, we will release a very special issue commemorating the magazine’s 50th year and telling the stories of the Coachella Valley. You will want to be a part of it.

The hefty volume in your hands now is packed with information for visitors to Palm Springs Desert Resorts and serves as an indispensable reference for our booming number of year-round residents. The good life abounds in the pages of Palm Springs Life: celebrity sightings, sophisticated fashion, luxurious homes, fine art and dining, and a world-class array of retailers.

When we speak of the valley, we often mention the vibe, the tranquility, the amenities, and the decadence. Oh, the decadence. Dip into the saucy feature “In the Swing,” in which contributing editor Howard Johns, author of Palm Springs Confidential: Playground to the Stars (Barricade Books), takes us back to the finger-snapping Rat Pack’s favorite downtown hangout, the Chi Chi. “Bigger than Ciro’s, better than the Trocadero, and more fun than the Mocambo that jammed L.A.’s Sunset Strip, the Chi Chi was a veritable shrine to ‘live’ entertainment,” Johns writes. “Located on Palm Canyon Drive, it was the scene of many outstanding debuts, several exciting comebacks, and a few tearful farewells.” The place was a veritable barometer for which celebrities, fashions, drinks were in like gin, and they kept audiences stomping and hollering for more. I recall when Frank Sinatra threw a bottle of Jack Daniels and shattered the Chi Chi’s bar-back mirror and was banned for life from the club by the proprietor, Irwin Shulman. Johns’ trenchant research and revealing text and photography will give you a deeper appreciation for what many Hollywood luminaries still consider a desert playground worthy of frequent retreat.

Palm Springs Life
celebrates the desert’s heritage in fine fashion, but we’re hardly stuck in the old days. Our greatest asset as a desirable destination is unquestionably the desert’s magnificent landscape — particularly the surrounding mountain range, which seven years ago gained the important national monument designation. The mountains, however, hold many secrets, legends, and myths of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. In “Legends of the Cahuilla,” J. Tracy Hermann and Tom Brewster capture the stories in words and pictures, respectively, to give the rest of us insight to the stories told from one generation to the next — stories almost as old as the mountains themselves.

There’s more: Fashion Editor Susan Stein and celebrity photographer Michael Childers showcase new and traditional styles for the season at the popular Palm Springs Air Museum.

The relaxing and spiritual nature (see “Wizards of Ahhhs,” on page 284) of Palm Springs Desert Resorts makes it an enduring success. Those who visit will likely return time and again. Some of us never leave. That’s what happened to me 50 years ago. Palm Springs Life has grown with the community and emerged as its arbiter of taste, style, and sophisticated living — “California’s Prestige Magazine.”

Don’t miss the 2007-2008 Desert Guide calendar and Great Restaurants sections, included in this valuable edition. Desert Guide also features listings to all the area’s best attractions, spas, galleries, shopping, and much more. For a deeper look at what Palm Springs Life and Desert Guide have to offer, point your Web browser to www.palmspringslife.com.

It’s a lot to take in — as is the desert itself. We hope you’ll want even more and subscribe to our monthly edition.

By doing so, your order will include the spectacular 50th Anniversary Edition (April 2008) and the 2008/2009 Palm Springs Life Annual Desert Living Edition.

Enjoy your Palm Springs Life!
